A Brain Teaser Called Sudoku Puzzles

Sudoku Puzzles

sudoku puzzles are brain teasers that have also been called wordless crossword puzzles. Sudoku Puzzles are often solved through lateral thinking and have been making a large impact all across the world.

Also known as Number Place, Sudoku puzzles are actually logic-based placement puzzles. The object of the game is to enter a numerical digit from 1 through 9 in each cell that is found on a 9 x 9 grid which is sundivided into 3 x 3 subgrids or regions. Several digits are often given in some cells. These are referred as givens. Ideally, at the end of the game, every row, column, and region must contain only one instance of each numeral from 1 through 9. Patience and logic are two qualities needed in order to complete the game.

Number puzzles very much similar to the Sudoku Puzzles have already been in existence and have found publication in many newspapers for over a century now. For instance, Le Siecle, a daily newspaper based in France, featured, as early as 1892, a 9x9 grid with 3x3 sub-squares, but used only double-digit numbers instead of the current 1-9. Another French newspaper, La France, created a puzzle in 1895 that utilized the numbers 1-9 but had no 3x3 sub-squares, but the solution does carry 1-9 in each of the 3 x 3 areas where the sub-squares would be. These puzzles were regular features in several other newspapers, including L'Echo de Paris for about a decade, but it unfortunately disappeared with the advent of the first world war.

Howard Garns, a 74-year-old retired architect and freelance puzzle constructor, was considered the designer of the modern Sudoku Puzzles. His design was first published in 1979 in New York by Dell, through its magazine Dell Pencil Puzzles and Word Games under the heading Number Place. Garns' creation was most likely inspired by the Latin square invention of Leonhard Euler, with a few modifications, basically, with the addition of a regional restriction and the presentation of the game as a puzzle, providing a partially-complete grid and requiring the solver to fill in the empty cells.

Sudoku Puzzles

sudoku puzzles were then taken to Japan by the puzzle publishing company Nikoli. It introduced the game in its paper Monthly Nikoli sometime in April 1984. Nikoli president Maki Kaji gave it the name Sudoku, a name that the company holds trademark rights over; other Japanese publications which featured the puzzle have to settle for alternative names.

In 1989, Sudoku Puzzles entered the video games arena when it was published as DigitHunt on the Commodore 64. It was introduced by Loadstar/Softdisk Publishing. Since then, other computerized versions of the Sudoku Puzzles have been developed. For instance, Yoshimitsu Kanai made several computerized puzzle generator of the game under the name Single Number for the Apple Macintosh in 1995 both in English and in Japanese language; for the Palm (PDA) in 1996; and for Mac OS X in 2005.

LG Nexus 4

On October 29th, Google will likely be showing off its new Nexus phone, a device that is widely believed to be the LG Nexus 4. The LG Nexus 4 has leaked out numerous times in recent days, culminating with a leak today that all but confirmed all of its major features. As a Galaxy Nexus owner, I’ve been interested to see what Google prepared for 2012 Nexus-wise. Here are my thoughts on the new Nexus phone.

LG Nexus 4 design

From the leaks, it appears that the LG Nexus 4 is going to be a plastic beast once again with a design that’s both heavier and thicker than the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I am just going to assume that this was because Google wanted to keep the costs down. Something else? The phone looks almost exactly like the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Nobody gave the rumour that LG would be chosen as the new flagship partner for Google, but after a litter of leaks, the smart money is on the Korean brand as the next in the Nexus clubhouse.
But how will it actually look? Well, with a litany of leaks spewing from the internet with increasing regularity, it seems pretty likely we know what the Google Nexus 4 will actually look like.
One of the most interesting pictures of the Nexus 4 is one with a worryingly sparkly back, bearing the moniker 'with Google' on the rear.

LG Nexus 4 specs

Specs-wise, it seems almost certain the Nexus 4 will have quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, an 8MP rear camera, 2GB of RAM and of course the latest version of Android.
Wireless charging would be an innovative new feature for the phone too, but of course we'll have to put up with the same non-removable battery and lack of microSD card slot too.

Storage Doesn’t Cut It

It looks like Google might be mirroring its Nexus 7 with the amount of storage its offering with the Nexus 4. Sadly, that’s not a good thing. 8GB and 16GB of storage space is just not going to cut it for any smartphone of mine. I found out the hard way with my 16GB iPhone 3GS and 16GB iPad and I’ll never buy another device that has less than 32GB of storage space.

LG Nexus 4 release date

One thing we can pretty much agree on is the fact that there's a new Nexus phone in the offing, and right on cue Google has announced a special event on October 29 to show off something.
What does that mean for a Nexus 4 release date? Well, it seems that we'll get something in the region of mid-November before we get anything on the shelves in preparation for the Christmas rush.
Update: Carphone Warehouse has revealed various details on its website, including the Nexus 4 release date, which is has as October 30.

LG Nexus 4 price

If the Nexus 4 price is anything like the labels attached to previous Galaxy phones, then we're in for an eye-watering outlay to get your hands on the new handset.
The Galaxy Nexus came in at £41 a month before you could get a free phone, which would put it miles ahead of the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S3 or HTC One X, which are the main competitors on specs at least.
At least the phone would come down in price pretty soon, as that's what happened most of the time with the other Nexii… but perhaps the Nexus 4 can blaze a trail and, wow, we don't know: actually come in at market value.
Update:According to Carphone Warehouse the LG Nexus 4 will be available for free on contracts starting at £31 per month over two years.

LG Nexus 4 competition

There are many rumours about other handsets are launching at the same time as the Nexus 4, with a number of phones being unveiled at once.
The HTC Nexus 5 was one of the first mooted, but that has since been shown as the HTC J Butterfly, the super-phone that will only be available in Japan.
Next up was the Samsung Galaxy Nexus 2, but this was simply due to the model number that fitted in the Nexus line up being spotted online. TheSamsung Galaxy Premier was also 'shown' in benchmarks, but given the lack of Nexus name it's unlikel

Google introduces 'Bacon number' -- What's the largest degree of separation you can find?

the search engine has launched a new tool known as the Bacon number. By typing in any actor’s name followed by the words “Bacon number,” Google will tell you the degree of separation between that actor and Mr. Bacon.
This tool stems from the party game, which tests movie buffs’ cinematic knowledge by challenging them to find the shortest way to connect any random actor to Bacon. With the new Google tool, you’ll never lose the game again! Well, that’s no fun. Who wants to play a game no one can lose?
That’s why we’ve decided to reverse the rules. Using the Bacon number tool, we challenge you to find the largest degree of separation between Kevin Bacon and a famous person of your choosing. Be warned: this is surprisingly hard. For example, you’d think Kim Kardashian would have a high Bacon number, but there’s actually only a two degree separation between the two. (Thanks, Denise Richards.) Here’s what we found:
Paul Wesley: I had to throw a Vampire Diaries cast member in here because I’m just too big a fan not to mention this show any time I can. Sadly, Wesley’s Bacon number is only two.
Christopher Nolan: I was particularly proud of this find. The Dark Knight Rises director’s Bacon number is three.
Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi: Thanks to a cameo in The Three Stooges, Snooki’s Bacon number isthree. I was hoping that turning to reality TV stars would help me win.
RuPaul: The RuPaul’s Drag Race host has a Bacon number of two! Who knew? Reality TV lets me down again!
Jai Courtney: This was when I started to get frustrated that I couldn’t find at least a four. So I started picking younger up-and-comers. Courtney can next be seen in Jack Reacher opposite Tom Cruise and he’ll play Bruce Willis’ son in A Good Day to Die Hard. But he hasn’t been in much yet, so I was hoping for something high. Alas, his number was only three.
Bela Lugosi: Not to be morbid, but my last hope was dead people. But even the original Dracula has a Bacon number of three.
So, the largest degree of separation I could find was three. Pathetic, I know — especially given that as of June 2011 there are 32 people in the IMDb database with a Bacon number of eight. Can you find any of the 32, PopWatchers?

AT&T Wireless Sold Out: iPhone 5 now has a waiting period of 3 to 4 Weeks

The iPhone 5 fever has hit everyone in the United States. Apple and its associates namely AT&T wireless, Verizon and Sprint are finding it difficult to cater to the orders of iPhone 5. The stocks at the AT&T has been exhausted within 10 hours and to the annoyance of customers.
They  had stayed up awake late in the night were informed that it will take at least two to three weeks to ship the orders. With the AT&T portal down for maintenance, it only added to the irritation of the customers.

Sale of iPhone 5 was started simultaneously by Apple, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon from midnight. However many users complained that they were not able to open their AT&T account. Users continued till the wee hours before giving up. There was an option to order directly from Apple which had given a delivery date on September 21st. However this option was also closed by 1 AM PDT when Apple had sold out all its first batch iPhone 5.
AT&T wireless has declared that it will deliver the iPhone 5 in 18 to 21 days. So it seems that the deliveries will be made between September 28 and October 5. However AT&T was referring to business days when it says that it will deliver the iPhone 5 in 20 days.

Nintendo Wii U adds TV, video for November launch

Nintendo Co's "Wii U", packed with innovative TV and video features, will hit U.S. store shelves on November 18 as it plays catch-up with Microsoft and Sony and aims to lure gamers back from the Internet and mobile devices.

The first Nintendo home console in six years will allow users to make personal TV and video programming lists and record shows through TiVo and other digital recording services.
"It should be the entertainment hub in the center of the house," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing.

The machine, starting at just under $300, will also come with a dedicated "Super Mario" game title.
For Nintendo, known for its game-centric approach, adding an entertainment component is a positive step, said Billy Pidgeon, an analyst at M2 Research. "It's a must-have right now and with this, they can catch up somewhat to Microsoft's Xbox offerings."

The Wii U is the first console machine to be sold by a major gaming industry company in more than six years. With a new Microsoft Corp Xbox and updated Sony Corp Playstation expected in 2013, sales will offer clues as to whether more advanced, next-generation game hardware can boost the ailing video game console and packaged games market.

Gamers have migrated steadily online or to mobile devices such as Apple Inc's iPad and this shift has weakened video game hardware and software sales.

The Wii has been a bonanza for Nintendo, with 100 million sold, but demand is waning. In the three months to June 30, Wii sales more than halved to 710,000 from 1.56 million a year earlier.

Nintendo, which is struggling to reverse years of losses, badly needs a hit. But the console is launching into a holiday season of tooth-and-nail competition.

Consumers are "going to make choices this holiday whether they want to buy a Fire, an iPhone 5, an iPad, a Wii U, and it's the broadest group of products and services we've ever seen," said P.J McNealy, CEO of Digital World Research.

The original Wii became the world's biggest selling home console shortly after its 2006 launch, with motion-controlled gaming and a slew of software titles that appealed to users beyond traditional gamers.

Nintendo hopes that its "TVii" feature will help spruce up demand. It will stream video from Netflix Inc, Amazon.com Inc, Google Inc's YouTube, and Hulu, taking a page from the Xbox.

A "GamePad" touch-screen controller can function as a remote control, and that second screen can be used to create personalized program lists. The controller, which enhances the video streaming and gaming experience, helped push its price tag above rival consoles. Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 start at $250 and $200, respectively.

The Wii U will go on sale in Japan on December 8 for about $340 (26,250 yen).
"Just looking at the price, it does seem a little high," Richard George, Nintendo executive editor at video game website IGN.com. "The catch is that the initial five to six months of the console, most of the people buying will be hardcore Nintendo fans."

Next level hardware battle
Repeating the Wii's success, however, will be tough as Nintendo battles not just Microsoft and Sony but also tablet and smartphone makers led by Apple that are eating into the $78 billion gaming market.

Apple on Wednesday revealed its latest iPhone with features that allow users to view their smartphone images and games on TVs equipped with an Apple TV receiver.

For now, Nintendo, which began in 1889 making playing cards in the back streets of Kyoto, has a big enough cash pile built up during the Wii boom about $14 billion to stick with its hardware strategy.

But if the Wii U fails to win over gamers, it may have to consider leveraging its software assets by letting Super Mario roam across devices built by other companies, analysts say.

The Wii U, unveiled in June, is available in black and white and has a 6.2-inch touch screen that includes a stylus.
Supporting two "GamePad" controllers designed to look and function like tablets, the first new console from Nintendo in six years will come with a gamer's social network called "Miiverse", though executives did not provide much more detail.

In addition to the basic 8 gigabyte model costing $299.99, Nintendo will sell a "deluxe" 32 GB version for $349.99 in the United States and 31,500 yen in Japan. The "deluxe" package will include its new Nintendo land game.

Nintendo will offer 23 original Wii U games. Third-party titles include Mass Effect 3 from Electronic Arts, Darksiders II from THQ, Ubisoft's exclusive Wii U title Zombie U and Activision Blizzard's Call of Duty Black Ops 2.
